The Complete (?) Toronto Film Festival Podcasts + Cool pic of Ben Gazzara
We talk about the movies I think you should know about from Toronto
Dear Last Thing I Sawfolk,
So I went up to Toronto, where it seems there was a film festival going on. Saw some movies, talked about a few, wrote about others. New movies from Steven Spielberg about growing up, Sarah Polley, Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele doing animation, and more. It’s all in here in a series of links.
Morvern Callar was a delight, by the way—remember, I introduced a screening as part of The New Essentials, a series at the Roxy Cinema in NYC where I chat amiably about great movies from the 2000s?
Missed it? The Roxy added another screening, tonight! So do catch up with this very fine 35mm print, which I can confirm looks lovely.
That’s all for now. Thank you to all the invaluable supporters who make the production of The Last Thing I Saw possible!
Your faithful host,
Nic

RECENT WRITING
For The Financial Times, I filed a report on the Toronto International Film Festival, where lots of Big Films make their entrance for the fall, such as Spielberg’s autobiographical The Fabelmans and others.
For Sight & Sound, I wrote up the very fine Nan Goldin film, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, directed by Laura Poitras, whose work I’ve found so rewarding for many years.
For The New York Times, I reviewed True Things, which I gave a Critic’s Pick.

ABOUT ME
Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw! I’m your host, Nicolas Rapold.
Besides hosting a podcast, I’m a writer and an editor. My features, interviews, festival dispatches, and reviews are published in The New York Times, Sight & Sound, Artforum, Filmmaker, and W Magazine (and appeared in dearly departed publications such as The Village Voice, Stop Smiling, The New York Sun, and The L Magazine).
I worked as editor-in-chief of Film Comment, where I was for 15 years. I assigned and edited both web and print editorial, hosted its podcast and talks and screenings, learned from brilliant writers, curated Film Comment Selects, and wrote a lot, including interviews with Spike Lee, Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche, and Frederick Wiseman. Film Comment was subsequently awarded the Film Heritage Award by the National Society of Film Critics (an honor historically awarded to the Museum of Modern Art and other institutions).
Feel free to get in touch re: writing, editing, moderating, programming, podcasting, etc.
